Hip-Hop

Our Hip-hop dance class is ideal for kids 6+ years old. In this beginner-level course, students will learn the foundations of Hip Hop movements while also learning popular dance moves. In this fun, fast-paced class students will build their confidence while increasing their flexibility, range of motion, physical strength, and stamina. In addition to the physical health benefits, learning dance enhances emotional development, encourages socialization & creativity, and enhances cognitive development.

This course is taught by David, a graduate from UC Berkley with a B.A. in Dance and Performance Studies. He is a dance instructor and choreographer who works with competitive teams and dance students K-12.

Breaking

Breaking, also called breakdancing or b-boying/b-girling, is a street dance style that evolved as part of the hip hop movement that originated in the South Bronx of New York City during the early 1970s. It is arguably the best known of all hip hop dance styles. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, breaking mainly consists of four kinds of movement: toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes.

This Breaking course is taught by Jay, a professional dancer and choreographer, he has participated in many individual and group dance competitions. He has also performed in many theatrical performances such as The Nut Cracker, Peter and the Wolf, and Halloween Spectacle. Co-founder of Rising Starz Crew in St. Louis, and the dance team, Marquette Madcap Militia in the Michigan upper peninsula. He has over 11 years of experience performing and teaching Breaking. Check out his reel!

Mandarin for Beginners

This is an entry-level course for students with some Chinese foundation. Students will learn basic skills in listening, speaking and writing. Course includes:
 

  • Pinyin
  • Character Strokes/ writing
  • Sentence Structure
  • Conversational Communication
  • Story reading, idioms, historical stories, fairy tales (cultural literacy)

Improv for kids with Andrew

This course is taught by Andrew who is very skilled in video production and a talented improvisational actor. He graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.S. in Film and Video. In addition, he completed the GO Comedy Improvisation Program. He was a member of several improv troupes locally including Improviser, 3 improv troupes, Plant Parenthood, Unicornucopia, and Fictional Friends. While working in the film industry in L.A. he studied at the Groundlings School of Improv.

Intro to Video Production with Andrew
This course is taught by an industry professional with a Bachelor of Science in Film and Video from Grand Valley State University. With over six years of experience producing more than 10 short films and videos, he has worked on hit shows such as, “This is Us”, “The Goldbergs”, “The Neighborhood”, and “All Rise”.

 In this course, students will write, produce, direct, and edit their own series of short films. Learn the basics of storyboarding, framing shots, lighting, writing and editing scripts, film and sound editing.

English:
Phonics, Reading and writing

This class will help elementary-aged students improve their spelling and grammar. Students will review basic phonics skills, such as vowel identification, consonant digraphs and blends, and reading and spelling simple Consonant-Vowel-Consonant words. The class will benefit those who have yet to master these skills, as well as those who need to maintain them.

 


Spanish for Beginners

This is an entry-level course for students with little to no previous experience. The recommended age is 5-10 years old. Students will learn the basic skills in listening and speaking and the ability to formulate simple sentences and ask questions on their own. Lessons include; Spanish alphabet, counting, colors, animals, food, emotions-feelings, weather, likes & dislikes, (verbs) talking about abilities.
